How You Can Help Charlotte Heal

Pray for her.

Write her words of encouragement.

Send letters / postcards to:
Charlotte Rose Ponce
PO Box 397
Fruitport, MI 49415

Contributions.

For the past couple of years, Charlotte has had access to funds raised to complete travel and surgery related expenses. At this time, Charlotte would benefit from access to psychological care and private education / tutoring as she has fallen behind socially and academically as a result of her surgical history.  Thank you for your generosity!  If you would like to make a contribution, you may mail one to the address above or by PayPal to healingcharlotte@gmail.com.  Anything extra when her surgeries, tutoring, and therapy are completed will be applied to education.

    SINCERELY

    • Hi Anne, Charlotte has seen a very good surgeon in Grand Rapids who helped to repair some of her scar tissue when she was 2-4 years old. The surgeon did not feel he could perform the nose reconstruction and referred her to the University of Michigan. The surgeons there attempted to use prosthetic ear and nose pieces attached to posts drilled into her bone through a very painful procedure. They did not look natural, and the posts were constantly infected and eventually removed. The family decided to give Charlotte a few “surgery free” years while they explored options. The surgeon who will do the upcoming procedures is from eastern Michigan, Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate, and was recently featured on mlive.com for his work on the nose reconstruction of a Honduran boy: http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2012/07/new_nose_for_honduran_teen_cre.html. We are very confident that this attempt will be successful! Thank you so much for your prayers.

    • Hi Thrifty Chic – you may send packages to Luke Ponce at Dynamic Conveyor, 5980 Grand Haven Road Muskegon, Michigan USA 49441. Luke, Charlotte’s brother, will hand deliver any packages to her. Thank you so much!

  3. I went to your doctors website. It says they use tissue from your own body and maybe some silicon or something. I was worried that they would want to transplant tissue from deceased donors. There is something so horrible about that. You still have many good features. Nobody’s perfect, you know.

    • Hi Melissa, thank you for the interest. Charlotte has had skin grafts before. Yes, she does know that she has many great features, but this situation is far beyond feeling “imperfect” — it’s about feeling less than whole, incomplete. She has grown up with young children being terrified of her or saying she looks creepy. When she was younger, they had to stop the ride at a carnival because a child was screaming with because he was so afraid of her. Everyone stares, too. Even if they don’t mean to. All she wants to do is be complete. She wants this, despite the pain, and this doctor can make it happen. We are so thankful for that.

      • Melissa, thank you for the generous, unconventional, offer. The best chance of success will come from using Charlotte’s own skin and tissues… but I will let the doctor know that we have a potential donor if it’s needed. 🙂

  4. Dearest Charlotte, we have read your whole story, have seen your hello kitty interview, and are inspired by your bravery and bright-eyed smile. My daughters share your love of red/white/and blue popsicles (as do I). We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers, and send all kind wishes for a fast recovery and more popsicles.

  5. Dear Charlotte and family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you today. And also with the surgeon. He has a monumental job to do.
